5 steps for a newbie to take before joining a yoga class

You might believe that yoga is just the latest fitness fad done only by celebrities  or young chickies in Lululemon yoga gear.  Actually, when done safely, yoga can be performed by most people of any age for both physical and mental health.  But, yoga is not a benign form of stretching. It pays to be informed.  Here are the five things beginners must do before stepping foot onto a sticky mat.

#1   Talk with a doctor. This isn’t just advice; it’s imperative.  The ability to withstand yoga poses and breathing techniques is best judged during a conversation with a primary care physician.  Yoga can put undue stress and strain on various joints and muscles.  Temporary increases in heart rate and blood pressure have been reported as well as exacerbations of asthma and other breathing difficulties.  The upshot? Make an appointment.

#2   Research different yoga styles. Hatha Yoga.  Power Yoga.  Hot Yoga.  Yin Yoga.  The variations are really endless and are probably confusing.  Not every form of this ancient art is safe for every grrl. Use a favorite search engine to do some online investigating.  Each type of yoga has its own approach to well-being.  Next, look up information as to what classes are offered in the area.   This will whittle down the choices right away.

#3  Visit a local yoga center.  Get a feel for the quality of the environment in which you are going to try something new. You’ll probably feel vulnerable cuz you are new at this yoga thang. So, is the atmosphere welcoming or is there a distinct vibe of exclusivity?   Is the receptionist approachable and ready to hand out information?  Is it clean?  Do they offer use of their mats?  What are the rates?  Gathering information can decrease apprehension.

#4   Talk with a yoga teacher.  Once you’ve chosen a class, speak with the instructor, letting them know of any health issues or limitations.  A well-trained yoga teacher will take interest in the safety of their pupils and will be prepared to listen and make suggestions.  A newbie should not be afraid of seeming clueless.

#5   Remember to approach yoga with a beginner’s mind. Learning something new can be inherently challenging. There are those who seem to bend into a pretzel easily.  That is the result of years of daily practice or just random genetic tendencies.  The uninitiated should treat themselves as such and find a beginner’s yoga class where they can ask questions, watch the teacher exhibit poses and breathing regimes as well as feel safe in the surroundings.

It is true that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.  You can join the millions of people already practicing yoga worldwide.

Take that first barefoot step by being well-informed…and remember to breathe.  (And don’t take yoga too seriously.)  Seriously.

Take a minute to comment about your first yoga class…
