Who, me?
Hey grrls!
delta here…It’s so nice to meet you virtually. Outrageous Age is a place to talk, listen, bitch and moan and, hopefully, learn some things about being healthy and happy and outrageous over 40. Let me introduce myself…
My life has been diverse and unconventional in many ways. I grew up in southern Oregon. After high school, I went to college at Southern Oregon University where, for three years, I majored in smoking pot and public radio announcing. Restless, I moved with my best friend to Boulder, CO. I worked at an herbal company and a health food store. I was a true hippy grrl, complete with a nose ring, hairy armpits and the scent of patchouli incense wafting in my wake.
I decided to become a homebirth midwife. While apprenticing, I thought, “Let’s do some homework!” So, I found a hot hippy boy to knock me up. (We were in “love.” I know…hindsight and all…) I had a magical home birth that ended with a beautiful daughter in my arms.
Not long after that, I became a single mom. Midwifery takes a few years to get a strong practice established and I needed a fucking reality check. I got my ass back in school, got a Creative Writing/English degree from Colorado State University, met my husband and, reality hit again…what the hell was I going to do now with my shiny new degree?
Well, when in doubt, go back to school…spiraling back around to my deep passion for alternative health care, I became an RN. I also knew I wanted to midwife…but on the other side of life. I became a hospice nurse.
I left hospice after a few years (…loved the work. My director? Not so much.) and marched my holistic self into the maw of the hospital system…so NOT a holistic arena. And you know what? I haven’t regretted it. It’s made me a better nurse. For the past three years I’ve been working as an Oncology nurse, performing the emotional labor of taking care of cancer patients and getting the honor of guiding the dying along their sacred path of death.
My goal here is inclusion and wholeness. There are no rules. I take from the scientific model and attempt to integrate it with the Wise Woman paradigm. Let’s nourish and support one another. You might not always like what I have to say and that is your right. Stay if you want. Comment if you do. Join the conversation.
Now, some other stuff that makes me unique:
I’m a good cook.
I have a perverse desire to become a raw foodist like Woody Harrelson.
I don’t drink alcohol.
I love Nutella, potato chips and Diet Coke.
I don’t like coffee.
I run every day, ski in the winter and backpack into the wilderness every summer.
I’ve smoked a few cigarettes in my day.
I love my husband.
I adore dogs.
I have more tattoos in mind.
I swear like a sailor.
I listen to all sorts of music every day but prefer loud rock and roll.
I am obsessed with unconventional culture trends.
I don’t see death as a failure.
I love the power that comes when women gather.
I’m delighted you’re here.
